One day trip to Zermatt from Milan?  It's possible !

It's not an easy decision when we decided we want to go to Zermatt, because we could not buy ticket to Zermatt from Italy train station (we tried to asked at the Trenitalia customer service at Rome Centrale train station), as they only sell ticket to Brig from Milan.... so, at the end that we finally bought ticket to Brig for Euro 35/person, and we have just hoping and assumed that we could buy another ticket to Zermatt when we arrived at Brig.

Tips (at any Italy train station) : Some people will offer you help to buy ticket or anything when you are near at the ticket machine, please do ignore that, if you really don't know how to buy ticket from the machine, better go to the Ticket office/Customer center at the ticket office.

We started our journey early in the morning at Milan. We arrived at Milano Centrale train station at 07:00 am morning, and waited for our train Trenitalia 50 destination to Brig.

It was the earliest schedule, train departed at 07:23am, and the journey took almost 2 hours and arrived at Brig station at 09:16am.
Brig is not a big train station, it's not very difficult to find the exit and where to buy ticket (and there are always have very nice people can be asked).
So, not having many difficulties, we bought a return ticket from Brig to Zermatt for CHF74/person at the ticket office at Brig station.

Tips : Actually if you want to really plan your day trip to Zermatt from Milan, you can buy ticket online at http://www.sbb.ch/en/

The Train departed at 9:49am direction to Visp, and arrived only for few minutes at Visp at 09:55am, and we change another train to Zermatt at 10:08am.

No worries, it's looks maybe complicated with some train changes, but in fact it's really easy and simple, because the they are small station, and only few platforms, and there always be anyone can be asked to show directions.

Vips to Zermatt will take around 1 hours by slow train with very fantastic landscape (especially in winter)

We arrived at Zermatt at 11:13am. Zermatt is famed as a mountaineering and ski resort of the Swiss Alps. To prevent air pollution, which could obscure the town's view of the Matterhorn, the entire town is a combustion-engine car-free zone. Almost all vehicles in Zermatt are battery driven and almost completely silent

And the next mission is go to the top....Gornergrat !

Going to Gornegrat from Zermatt train station is very easy, just few steps away, in front of the exit of Zermat train station, you can see the Gornegrat Bahn Matterhorn Railways (train ticket office to Gornegrat). we bought a return ticket for CHF76/person.

Gornegrat Bahn
Bahnhof, CH-3920, Zermatt
Tel : +41(0)848 642 442

People will do skiing at Zermat and will spend days here...but for us, as we only do day trip, so we will just enjoy the view from the 3089m altitude to see the famous chocolate Toblerone mountain, Matterhorn.

The last stop of the Gornergrat train station, which opened in 1898 is consider the highest open-air railway in Europe (3,089 m above sea level).

Not far from the exit you can see Kulm Hotel and a restaurant with some souvenir shops and a small chapel.

It's lunch time when the time we arrived at Gornergrat, so we had lunch at the restaurant at the building which look like a big observatorium.

We spent time for about 3 hours taking photo, hike to the top, enjoying the view all the peaks, then we returned back to Zermatt by taking the same train.

Day trip to Zermatt from Milan, is not a cheap journey (especially if you don't have any Swiss pass or any Euro railways pass, but it's fun !! and it's all possible !

We departed from Zermatt in the afternoon by taking 17:37pm train to Brig via Visp, and arrived at Milan at around 9 pm.
